Briscola is a card game for 2, 3 or 4 players which is very popular in certain countries such as Spain and Italy. The Spanish deck with 40 cards is the one used to play this game traditionally. In case of a 3 players match, the Twos are removed from the deck. The goal of the game is to net more points than your opponents in order to win the round and the first player or team to reach the target amount of rounds wins the game.
One of the players will be picked randomly to start and will be considered the hand, however on the following round, it’s the player that won the last trick that will start the new one and be the hand.
Each player is handed 3 cards each from the deck. After that, a trump card will be set in the middle of the table, which will define which suit is the trump of that round.
Each turn, each player will play one card and then follow counter-clockwise. The winner of that trick is the player that discards the best trump card or if no trump cards are played, the best card of the suit that was discarded first.
After seeing who wins the trick, everyone draws a new card from the deck and the person that won the trick will be the first one to discard a new card.
You can switch certain trump cards with the one on the table after winning a trick if:
The round ends when all players discard all their cards and there are no cards remaining on the deck to be taken. The player or team with more points wins the round.
The match ends when one of the players or team reaches the target amount of rounds won. If it’s a single round match, the player or team that gets more points wins.
It’s just like a 4-player match, but each couple shares the same amount of points and rounds won. At the end of each round, the points gotten from all tricks of both players will be combined and the team with more points wins the round.
A draw can be achieved by having all players accepting a draw proposal. In case of a points draw, the person that is the hand wins. If the draw is not between the hand and other players, then the person closest to the hand (to the right) is the winner.
The cards are worth as it follows:
